Founder Andries Eigelaar began as a trek-net fisherman in Dwarskersbos, later moving to Laaiplek to sell fresh and salted fish. With his first fishing boat, Prince Edward, he entered pelagic fishing, laying the foundation for Eigevis.
After Andries’ sudden passing, his son, Floors Eigelaar, takes over as chairman. Determined to honour his father’s dream, Floors expands the salted fish business, opening fish shops in Wolseley, Moorreesburg, and Vredendal.
The Eigelaar family acquires the Hoedjiesbaai Hotel in Saldanha, marking their first step into the hospitality industry.
Eigevis launches the 69-foot Groenveld II and builds a 200-ton cold storage facility, further expanding operations. They also acquire Vredenburg Kelders, strengthening their business portfolio.
The Laaiplek Handelshuis opens its doors, becoming a central part of Eigevis’ growing network.
Eigevis expands into Namibian waters through Eigelaar Interests, acquiring the vessel Koakoveld II for operations.
The company adds the vessel Eigeveld to its fleet in 1966 and acquires farmland (now Sandboskraal) along with a butchery license in 1967.
Eigevis sends vessels to Las Palmas and opens the Eigelaar Marine Store in Walvis Bay. In 1972, the company builds a new Hoedjiesbaai Hotel, cementing its position in the hospitality sector.
Laaiplek Handelshuis grows with a new store in Saldanha, and Eigevis acquires the Laaiplek and Riviera Hotels, broadening its hospitality offerings.
The company opens the iconic Eigebraai restaurant at the Laaiplek Hotel, specialising in traditional fish braais and seafood dishes.
Eigevis ventures into Chile and launches its own line of hake products, expanding into new international markets.
The company diversifies with Eigevis Brandy and more retail and hotel ventures. In 1998, André Eigelaar becomes chairman after Floors Eigelaar’s retirement, continuing the family’s leadership legacy.
Eigevis adds chalets to the Riviera Hotel and launches the Atlantic Leader vessel in 2004, modernising its fleet.
The Eigelaar Marine Store opens in Mossel Bay in 2008, and the company establishes the Sandboskraal Meat deboning factory by repurposing the old Stokvis plant.
Eigevis acquires two vessels, Nossob and Dynersvag, to support South Africa, Namibia, and Angola operations. In 2014, Laaiplek Handelshuis joins the EST Africa/Built group, expanding Eigevis’ national reach.
Carel Mienie takes over as Managing Director from André Eigelaar in 2015. Eigevis also launches its first self-storage facility and opens a factory store in Laaiplek harbor under Sandboskraal Meatpackers.
Eigevis acquires Kleinmond Bouhandel and invests in property at Bloumosselstrand, Dwarskersbos. In 2019, the company also secures a 20% stake in the Kidds Beach Shopping Centre in East London.
Following the sinking of the Ankoveld on February 16, Eigevis quickly replaces it with the Noordeveld, demonstrating the company’s resilience.
Like many businesses, Eigevis faces challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is slowing operations but keeping it focused on recovery and growth.
Hotel Possible takes over the management of Eigevis’ three hotels, elevating their hospitality offerings and operations.
Eigevis is celebrating its 65th anniversary, a proud milestone that celebrates decades of hard work, family values, and community involvement.
Kobus Eigelaar steps in as Chairman, ensuring family leadership continues for the next generation. Eigevis also expands its self-storage offerings by acquiring Eigevis Storage 2.
